<Paul Aldred-Bann/>
Computer programmer, old skool "all-stack" engineer and agentic puppet master. It’s extremely likely that you’ve used things I’ve built.
I'm a developer who started with the fundamentals - understanding how computers work at the lowest levels, how data is stored, moved, and optimised across different forms of memory and storage. That grounding has shaped how I approach problems throughout my career. I've built and shipped software across a wide range of languages, stacks, and platforms: from systems for UK government and academia to software running on vessels at sea. I've improved on-premise platforms for clients not yet ready for the cloud, and I've led digital transformations both into the cloud and back again when the situation called for it.
These days I use modern tools, including AI, as accelerators to move faster and smarter - but never as a substitute for fundamentals. I care about picking the right tool for the job, and about leaving behind systems that others can maintain and build upon with confidence. Alongside the technical work, I've spent a lot of time mentoring and coaching teams, because the people I work with matter as much as the code.
At the end of the day, my reputation is the most valuable thing I carry. I aim to deliver work that's best-in-class... sometimes I get there, sometimes I don't, but that's always the bar I set. I can move fast when it's needed, but I prefer to work methodically. In the triangle of fast, cheap, and good, I lean toward good (with a bit of fast). I don't consider myself “cheap,” and I don't believe in undercutting just to win work. What I do believe in is the inherent value of good work, built on mutual respect and solid partnerships. When I commit to something, I'm all in.
